Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive: Plan Your Stops

Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive brings forest, dunes, and Lake Michigan views into one scenic loop. Give yourself time to stop, and treat the overlooks as places to enjoy from the designated viewing areas.

Know what kind of outing you are choosing

The National Park Service describes a 7.4-mile, one-way drive with 12 interpretive stops. That makes it a useful first choice when your group wants varied scenery without committing to a long trail. It does not mean every viewpoint is reached without walking or that every stop suits every visitor.

Read the park’s drive information before you enter, especially if you have a large vehicle or specific mobility needs. The route has vehicle restrictions. Check current conditions and the entrance-pass requirements rather than assuming that a road through the park is always open or free to enter.

Choose a few priority stops

Instead of treating every turnout as mandatory, decide what matters most: forest atmosphere, dune views, the covered bridge, or Lake Michigan. Use the official numbered-stop guide to locate those priorities, then leave the remaining stops flexible.

Our suggested visit is a relaxed scenic outing rather than a timed lap. If you stop often for photographs or a picnic, give it a generous part of the day. A slow start is more pleasant than discovering that the view you most wanted has become a race against another reservation.

Enjoy the lake overlook from above

The steep sand slope below the Lake Michigan overlook can make the lake look deceptively close. Stay in the designated viewing area. Descending the slope creates a demanding return climb and can lead to rescue situations; it is not a convenient beach-access route.

For photographs, work with the sweep of the shoreline and the scale of the dunes. Include a railing or a tree at the edge of the frame if it helps show the height. Keep paths clear, supervise children, and avoid stepping beyond a barrier for a cleaner composition.

Plan for different walking needs

Review the NPS accessibility descriptions stop by stop. A scenic drive can still involve slopes and surfaces that matter to someone using a wheelchair, walking aid, or stroller. The right question is whether a particular viewing area works for your group, not whether the entire drive can be called accessible.

Bring the supplies you need for a comfortable break and take advantage of a suitable designated picnic area when available. Use official parking spaces and avoid trying to stop along the moving lane for a photograph.

Add one nearby experience

Choose one companion activity instead of trying to see all of Sleeping Bear in an afternoon. Empire Bluff makes sense for a group that still wants a walk; a town stop in Empire gives you a different pace. A first-visit plan can also pair the drive with Glen Haven when its facilities are open.

If the drive is closed, do not build the day around reaching its overlooks on an assumed alternate route. Consult the park’s conditions page and select an open trail or another established destination.

Questions before you go

Is this the Dune Climb?

No. Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and the Dune Climb are separate park destinations. Choose them for different experiences.

Is the drive open all year?

Vehicle access is seasonal and weather dependent. Check the current NPS notice before traveling.
