Leelanau Wine Tasting: Plan a Relaxed Day

A satisfying Leelanau wine day leaves room for conversation, a meal, and the landscape between stops. Choose a small cluster of tasting rooms, arrange transportation first, and confirm each visit before setting out.

Choose a cluster, not the whole peninsula

Begin with where you are staying and the part of the peninsula you want to explore. Then choose two or three potential tasting stops in that area rather than building a route that zigzags across Leelanau. This is our planning recommendation, not a suggested amount to drink.

Leave space for lunch and for the visits to take longer than expected. A good conversation in one tasting room can be more memorable than squeezing in another appointment. Check travel time with a current map after you have settled on the actual destinations.

Two places pictured in the VisitLP collection

Black Star Farms has a Suttons Bay location with a tasting room and an inn. Its separate Old Mission location is on another peninsula, so check the address carefully when planning a Leelanau day. The VisitLP collection includes the Suttons Bay tasting room, courtyard, and vineyard approach.

Aurora Cellars is another photographed stop, in the Lake Leelanau area. Its winery and tasting scenes provide a different setting for this guide. These are starting points for research, not a claim that two businesses represent every style of Leelanau wine or every visitor’s preference.

Confirm the experience you want

Check each winery’s current tasting format, reservation policy, and group-size rules. Ask about food, seating, and how much time to allow if those details affect your plans. A tasting, a glass on a patio, and a special event may have different arrangements.

Groups with children, pets, or a guest who is not drinking should ask about policies and suitable alternatives directly. Do not treat an outdoor photograph as confirmation that a patio will be open or that every member of your party can participate in the same way.

Make transportation the first booking

Arrange a designated non-drinking driver or a professional transportation service before committing to a tasting schedule. Verify the pickup area, capacity, return arrangements, and any winery restrictions that apply to your group. Do not build the day around an assumed last-minute ride.

Once transportation is settled, share the plan with everyone: meeting time, addresses, reservations, lunch, and the return. Keep tasting choices individual. Someone who prefers to skip a pour or spend more time enjoying the grounds should not have to keep up with the rest of the group.

Enjoy the landscape without trespassing

Vineyards make appealing photographs, especially when grapes are visible, but they are working agricultural spaces. Use visitor areas and ask before stepping into vine rows. The grape photographs in this guide are part of the existing VisitLP collection, not an invitation to enter any orchard or vineyard you pass.

Close the day with a town visit in Suttons Bay or Lake Leelanau if it fits your route. For a trip that mixes wine with other interests, pair this guide with the scenic-drive overview and choose fewer stops from each. The goal is a day with a comfortable rhythm.

Questions before you go

Do all wineries accept walk-ins?

Policies differ and can change for groups or events. Confirm directly with each tasting room.

Can I combine both Leelanau and Old Mission in one relaxed day?

You can plan a wider trip, but they are separate peninsulas. For this guide’s slower pace, concentrate on Leelanau and save the other area for another day.
