WHY LELAND

Water, history, and an easy pace.

Leland sits on a narrow stretch of the peninsula between Lake Michigan and Lake Leelanau. Its compact center is easy to explore on foot, with Fishtown, the harbor, the river, shops, dining, art, and Van’s Beach all close together.

The village works especially well as a half-day stop, but an unhurried full day leaves room for the museum, a beach walk, a meal, and the surrounding lakeshore.

AT A GLANCE

Build the day around a few good stops.

BEST FOR

A walkable village day

Historic waterfront, local food, shopping, galleries, a museum, and a Lake Michigan beach.

ALLOW

Half day to full day

A few hours covers the village core. Add a meal, museum visit, beach time, or nearby trail for a longer day.

GOOD TO KNOW

Arrive with flexibility

Peak summer brings limited central parking, lines, and seasonal hours. Confirm important stops before you leave.

START HERE

Historic Fishtown and the river.

Begin at Fishtown, where preserved fishing shanties line the Leland River near Lake Michigan. It is a working waterfront as well as a visitor destination, so move thoughtfully around docks and business entrances.

From the river, continue into the village for local shops and galleries, or walk west on Cedar Street to the public access trail for Van’s Beach.

STAY IN LELAND

Keep the river and village close.

Leland lodging ranges from small riverfront inns to a year-round lodge. Review room location, accessibility, policies, and seasonal availability directly with each property.

A SIMPLE FULL DAY

One way to experience Leland.

MORNING

Walk Fishtown first.

Arrive before the busiest part of the day. Explore the riverfront, then visit the museum or an art space when its doors open.

AFTERNOON

Choose your own pace.

Pick up lunch, browse Main and River streets, then make time for Van’s Beach or a nearby nature preserve.

EVENING

Stay by the water.

Return for dinner or a river walk. Confirm reservations and closing times, especially outside peak summer.

PARKING

Follow local signs.

Central parking is limited during busy periods. Use marked public spaces, allow extra time, and never block private drives or working access.

SEASONS

Check every key stop.

Some restaurants, shops, and visitor services operate seasonally. Hours can change with weather and staffing.

THE WATER

Conditions come first.

Lake Michigan can change quickly. Review the weather, use good judgment, and follow posted beach and harbor guidance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A few answers before you arrive.

Can I walk between downtown, Fishtown, and Van’s Beach?

Yes. They are close together in the village core. Sidewalks, crossings, surfaces, and crowding vary, so review the route for your own mobility needs.

How much time should I allow?

Allow at least a few hours for Fishtown and the village. A full day makes room for a meal, the museum or an arts stop, and time near the water.

Is Leland open year-round?

The community is active year-round, but individual businesses and attractions may have seasonal schedules. Confirm hours directly, especially from late fall through spring.

Can I take the ferry to the Manitou Islands?

There is no Manitou Island Transit service in 2026 because both island docks are closed for the season. For a future trip, confirm dock status, ferry service, weather, and National Park Service guidance before planning around it.

Where should I check current local information?

Use the official websites linked in each VisitLP listing. For general village information, consult the Leland Chamber, Fishtown Preservation, and the organizations operating each place.
